Ultimate Citizens

Ultimate Citizens is not a movie about Frisbee. The “flat ball” is one tool that Jamshid Khajavi uses in his work as a primary school counselor. A fiery, funny 65-year-old Iranian immigrant and ultra-endurance athlete, Jamshid does his best work on the playing field with his students, the children of refugees and immigrants.

Jamshid’s efforts to build a community where all kids can thrive are heroic. But it’s the parents who work low-paying jobs around the clock, and their first-generation American kids, who are the champions. They save themselves, with a little help from a counselor in a supportive school.

folk frontera

Alejandra Vasquez and Sam Osborn

Far West Texas is a place where local folklore looms as large as the landscape. Two fronteriza women—one a public radio music show host, the other a Mariachi and folklórico dancer—live in two cultures at the same time, as they struggle to find their place in the vast Chihuahuan Desert. Touches of magical realism infuse this portrait of life along the U.S.- Mexico border.

“Stoop Chat with Jimmy & Shanaya” follows the unlikely friendship of blind Brooklyn poet, “Harmonica Jimmy,” and his younger neighbor, Shanaya, as they forge an uplifting bond based on their love of poetry, music, and the things that make New York, New York.
